The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Strategy and Orientation, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, has reiterated the State Government’s strong commitment under the leadership of Governor Douye Diri to sustaining peace, security, and development across Bayelsa State.
Mrs. Koku-Obiyai stated this while receiving members of the Bayelsa State Peace Architecture during a meeting at her office in Yenagoa. She emphasized that peace remains non-negotiable and is a central pillar of the Prosperity Administration, noting that the government has made deliberate and substantial investments to ensure stability in the state.
She expressed concern over the growing menace of drug abuse among youths, describing it as a major threat to peace and social stability, and assured the delegation of the Ministry’s continued partnership and support for programmes aimed at strengthening peace-building and community engagement across the state.
The Commissioner further encouraged members of the Peace Architecture to sustain their advocacy and intervention efforts even beyond the expected conclusion of the European Union support in April, stressing that peace initiatives must be continuous and locally driven. She also advised staff of the Ministry to take advantage of available training programmes organized by the committee to improve their capacity in peace promotion and conflict management.
Earlier in his remarks, Secretary of the Bayelsa State Peace Architecture, Dr. Inebaraton Preye, who led the delegation alongside the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Mr. Francis Opuomoni, and Mr. Chorbe Joshua, commended the Bayelsa State Government for its consistent support, describing Bayelsa as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria.
Dr. Preye disclosed that the Community Peace Commission is set to be inaugurated after the completion of legislative procedures, explaining that the commission will institutionalize peace-building efforts in line with global best practices and ensure sustainability of the Peace Architecture structure in the state.
He also informed the Commissioner of the forthcoming Peace Award Ceremony scheduled to hold on March 17 at Golden Tulip Hotel, Yenagoa, where Governor Douye Diri, the late Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and the current Deputy Governor, Peter Akpe, will be honoured for their contributions to peace and stability in Bayelsa State.
A highlight of the visit was the presentation of a cap, bag, and T-shirt to the Honourable Commissioner as tokens of appreciation for her support and commitment to the peace-building process.
Other members of the delegation present at the meeting included Mr. Ifiemeya Anthony Borisei and other officials of the Bayelsa State Peace Architecture.
