The Bayelsa State U-15 Secondary Schools Athletics Competition, organised by the Bayelsa State Athletics Association, has been held at Bishop Dimeari Grammar School and the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Yenagoa.
Thousands of students from both public and private secondary schools across the eight Local Government Areas of Bayelsa State participated in the one-day athletics competition, competing in various track and field events.
In the girls’ 100 metres race, Evelyn finished first with a time of 13.16 seconds, while Mercy Genuine of Bayelsa State Sports Academy, Asoama came second in 13.50 seconds, and Stella Obot of CSS Elebele finished third in 13.65 seconds.
In the boys’ 100 metres event, Yorgo of Southern Ijaw Secondary School, Oporoma breasted the tape in 11.56 seconds to emerge champion, ahead of Augustine Godgift of Ijaw National Academy, Kaiama who finished second in 11.71 seconds, while Otokolo Preye of Bayelsa Sports Academy, Asoama placed third in 11.75 seconds.
In the shot put event, Dams Winner of Ijaw National Academy, Kaiama won the girls’ category with a throw of 8.05 metres, while his schoolmate Iyadoghe Fidelis clinched first position in the boys’ category with a throw of 11.78 metres.
The boys’ 400 metres race was won by Embrikegbamo Emmanuel of Ijaw National Academy, Kaiama in 53.25 seconds, while Francis Unique of Saint Jude’s Girls Secondary School, Amarata finished first in the girls’ category with a time of 1 minute, 03.72 seconds.
In the 800 metres event, Felix Ebakamo of Ijaw National Academy, Kaiama won the girls’ race in 2:35.55 seconds, while Ikuru Emmanuel of CCSS Elebele finished first in the boys’ category with a time of 2:12.62 seconds.
In the javelin final, Aki Agathe of Tare Pet Secondary School won the girls’ event with a throw of 19.75 metres, while Lucky Divine of CSS Okutukutu/Etegwe clinched first position in the boys’ category with a throw of 37.15 metres.
The long jump event saw Justina Samuel win gold in the girls’ category with a leap of 4.75 metres, while Suoyo Saviour of Southern Ijaw Secondary School, Oporoma finished first in the boys’ event with 5.84 metres.
Also, Offering Peremobowei, also of Southern Ijaw Secondary School, Oporoma, won the boys’ discus final with a throw of 24.90 metres.
Some of the participating students expressed excitement at the opportunity to showcase their talents, describing the competition as a platform to discover and promote young athletes in the state.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Athletics Association, Dr. Kola Oredipe, expressed satisfaction with the turnout, noting that the competition would help the Association identify and groom talented athletes for the National Youth Games and other future competitions.
Also speaking, the Head Coach of Bayelsa Athletics, Mr. Richard Torugbene, assured that the coaching crew would continue to nurture the identified talents to become future champions.
On his part, the National Treasurer of the Nigerian Schools Sports Federation (NSSF) and Bayelsa State Coordinator, Mr. Godwin Adagbo, expressed delight at the level of talent displayed by the students, describing the competition as a huge success.
The competition, which featured mainly field and track events including Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Shot Put, Javelin, Discus, and races, also served as part of the selection process for athletes that will represent Bayelsa State in future national sporting events.
