As part of the activities marking the burial of the late Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the State Governor, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, his wife, traditional rulers, captains of industry, and members of the political class attended sporting activities held in his honour at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.
The games, which marked the beginning of the four-day burial programme, included a football match between Bayelsa Queens and a Selected All-Stars Football Team, a 4×100 metres relay race by Bayelsa State athletes, wrestling bouts, and tug-of-war.
It will be recalled that the late Deputy Governor, Senator Ewhrudjakpo, directly supervised the Ministry of Sports Development, among other responsibilities, until his death.
The high point of the games was the ceremonial kick-off performed by the State Governor, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, for the football match.
Dignitaries in attendance included the Senator representing Bayelsa East in the Senate, Senator Benson Agadaga; the member representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency, Chief Fred Agbedi; the member representing Ogbia Federal Constituency, Hon. Mitema Obordor; the member representing Nembe/Brass Federal Constituency, Mrs. Marie Ebikake; the member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency, Hon. Oforji Oboku; some non-serving members of the National Assembly; the Speaker, Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere; the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Matilda Abrakasa-Ayemieye; former Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peremobowei Ebebi; the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei; members of the Executive Council; Chairman, State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM King Bubaraye Dakolo; and other top government functionaries.
