The Bayelsa State Government has Inaugurated
Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative(MAMII) Taskforce Committee in Yenagoa.
Inaugerating the Committee on behalf of the state government, the state Commissioner for Health, Professor Seiyefa Brisibe noted that MAMII is a government-led strategic intervention instrument designed to significantly reduce maternal and newborn deaths by strengthening health systems, expanding access to quality healthcare, and deploying innovative strategies to areas where mortality rates are highest.
He added that it is also a major health program launched in Nigeria aimed at drastically reducing deaths among mothers and newborns, which according to him, are the most critical twin public health challenges in the country.
He stressed that the initiative is targeted at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates, particularly in high-burden areas, improve access to quality maternal and newborn health services at community, primary healthcare (PHC), and emergency obstetric care facilities, strengthens surveillance and response systems to understand and act on causes of deaths.
The State’s Chief Health Officer charged the newly commissioned Committee members to remain steadfast, proactive, and be fully committed to the effective delivery of their assignment.
Professor Brisibe also implore them to be guided by accountability, and collaboration as these are essential tools for ensuring strategic policy implementation into sustainable development.
Dignitaries that graced the occasion includes, Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Jones Stow, Executive Secretary Bayelsa Health Insurance Scheme(BHIS), Dr. Agedah, Executive Secretary of the Bayelsa State’s Primary Health Care Board(BYSPHCB), Dr. Williams Appah, Director of Medical Services Ministry of Health, Dr. Ingowari Torunana, State’s SWAP Coordinator, Dr. Ebikapaye Okoyen, and other top Ministry Staff and Gov’t functionaries.
