Yenagoa – The Bayelsa State Directorate of Flood and Erosion Control has entered into a strategic partnership with the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Bayelsa State Directorate, to intensify public sensitization on flood-related issues across the state.
The partnership was formalized during a courtesy visit by the NOA State Executive to the Directorate’s Secretariat in Yenagoa on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Speaking during the meeting, the Director General of the Directorate, Surv. Wilson Omuso, identified key challenges hampering flood mitigation efforts in Yenagoa and its environs. These include the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in water channels, construction of structures on canals, and unchecked growth of grasses in waterways. He explained that while rainfall largely determines water volume, blocked channels prevent proper evacuation of excess water, thereby leading to flooding.
Omuso emphasized that flood mitigation is not just a state issue but a national and international concern, requiring collaboration at all levels. He urged NOA to intensify efforts in reorienting the public against practices that worsen flooding.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of NOA, Mrs. Olobio Grace, reaffirmed the Agency’s mandate to sensitize and enlighten the public on government policies, programmes, and activities. She disclosed that flood mitigation is one of the core areas of their ongoing sensitization campaigns, hence the visit and collaboration with the Directorate to boost public awareness on the issue.
The partnership is expected to foster a more coordinated and impactful sensitization strategy aimed at reducing the risk and impact of flooding in Bayelsa communities.
