…Tasks Communities on Crime Reduction and Social Order
Sagbama, Bayelsa State – The Chairperson of Sagbama Local Government Council, Hon. Mrs. Alice Tangi Allen, has called on traditional rulers and Community Development Committee (CDC) chairmen across Sagbama LGA to intensify efforts in eradicating crime and social vices within their domains.
Speaking during a meeting held in her conference hall on Thursday, September 25, 2025, Hon. Allen emphasized that crime and criminality were societal misnomers that must not be allowed to thrive in Sagbama. She highlighted several critical issues requiring urgent attention, including the incessant blocking of the Ekeremor/Sagbama highway with sand dumps, logs, blocks, and firewood, which she warned endangers motorists and hinders free movement.
On crime prevention, the Council Chairperson sternly cautioned against harbouring, aiding, or abetting criminals, stressing that her office remains open to receive reports of unlawful activities. She pledged to hold regular security meetings with community leaders to ensure timely interventions.
Hon. Allen further addressed issues of drug and substance abuse, urging communities to report sales and consumption to the government for decisive action. She also called for proper identification and data collection of non-indigenes in community registers to enhance accountability and security.
In addition, she underscored the importance of environmental sanitation, urging communities to sustain regular cleaning exercises to maintain a healthy and safe environment.
“Security is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we must ensure that Sagbama remains safe, clean, and peaceful for all,” she said.
Responding on behalf of the traditional rulers and CDC leaders, His Royal Highness Friday G. Toun-aregha, Amananaowei of Toru Orua and Chairman of the Traditional Rulers Council in Sagbama LGA, expressed gratitude to the Council Chairperson. He assured her of their commitment to promptly report criminal activities, tackle drug abuse, promote environmental cleanliness, and implement other resolutions from the meeting.
The meeting was attended by representatives from Toru Orua, Okumbiri, Egbopuloama, Ofoni Federated Community, Awegbene, and Ossiama communities, who pledged to work closely with the Council in advancing peace, order, and development in Sagbama LGA.
