The Honourable Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mrs. Ebiowou Koku-Obiyai, has reaffirmed the Bayelsa State Government’s commitment to environmental sustainability through strategic afforestation efforts.
The Commissioner made this known during a courtesy visit by the Beautiful Trees for a Better Future Initiative at her office in Information House, Ovom, Yenagoa. She stated that in the face of the challenges posed by global warming, trees remain essential to sustaining life and ensuring a healthier environment for future generations.
Mrs. Koku-Obiyai emphasized the central role of tree planting within the broader context of His Excellency Senator Douye Diri’s ASSURED Prosperity Agenda, noting that agriculture and environmental stewardship are key pillars of the administration’s development strategy. She reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to partner with the Initiative in achieving its ambitious target of planting 1,000 trees across the state, stressing that such efforts not only contribute to mitigating climate change but also yield substantial economic and health benefits.
In his remarks, the Executive Director of the Initiative, Chief Okolo B. O., highlighted the organization’s ongoing work in promoting environmental consciousness. He explained that the Beautiful Trees for a Better Future Initiative is a registered non-governmental organization committed to educating communities about the importance of tree planting. According to him, the group has already conducted several awareness campaigns and facilitated the planting of both ornamental and fruit-bearing trees across the state.
Chief Okolo expressed the Initiative’s desire to collaborate more closely with the Ministry to expand their outreach and deepen public engagement on environmental matters.
Also present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Ifiemeya Borise, and other senior directors.
