The Bayelsa State Government recently welcomed an 11-man accreditation team from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for the accreditation of programmes in the state-owned universities.
The team was received at the Government House, Yenagoa, by the Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, on behalf of the Governor, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri.
While welcoming the team, Senator Ewhrudjakpo noted that the meeting centered on the ongoing accreditation of the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) and the Niger Delta University (NDU), the two key institutions driving the vision for a healthier and better trained Bayelsa.
He emphasized that the government established BMU not to compete with NDU but to complement it, with the goal of producing skilled medical professionals needed to strengthen the state’s health system.
“Over the past five years, this administration has deliberately invested more in human capital development within the health sector than in physical infrastructure. Because while buildings are important, it is people ,trained doctors, nurses, and health workers who sustain quality healthcare.
Bayelsa is in a hurry to develop, and we are fully committed to meeting all required standards for accreditation. We welcome the MDCN’s guidance on how we can improve further and assure that we will not compromise on quality or professionalism.
We are grateful to the MDCN team, led by Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, for the visit and their encouraging words about our efforts so far. Together, we will continue to build a health system that meets global standards and serves our people effectively.
