The Bayelsa State Ministry of Health, in partnership with Global Fund Organization and NCDC, has launched Events-Based Surveillance (EBS) centers across the state.
EBS systems enable the rapid detection and response to unusual health events, outbreaks, or public health threats from various sources across the state.
The state’s Health Commissioner assured Bayelsans during his visit to the center in the Department of Epidemiology in the Ministry of Health on Friday last week that, as a Ministry, they will deliberately develop the state’s health sector.
Prof. Brisibe highlighted that the EBS systems are being introduced as part of the state government’s efforts to make the health systems easy and accessible, stating that the BYS Government, in partnership with the Global Fund and NCDC, has yielded great results in the health sector.
The Health Commissioner also called on Bayelsans to report health cases as the Ministry has operationalized the Event-Based Surveillance Connect Centre in the Epidemiology department of the Ministry of Health.
He noted that the concept of the state government is to mainstream public health and advocate for health in all the policies and programs in the state.
“Bayelsa is one of the states provided with EBS out of the 36 states; the hardware has been provided for over one and a half years, but with the current health commissioner onboard, we are able to put it to use. It will enhance our public emergency healthcare system,” Dr. Abbaye, Director of the Epidemiology Department, said.
The Health Commissioner, in his words, said, “Not too long ago, we commissioned an Oxygen Plant in both Brass and Sagbama local government areas of the state, and now we have witnessed another success from the same Global Fund for thiso Event-Based Surveillance.”
